I AM Now Awakening to Divine Presence and Unity with God

The soul does not have to travel across the heavens to find God. It has to become still enough to notice what has never left.

Many of us inherited a picture of God as somewhere else. High above. Looking down. Waiting to be reached through the right words, the right rituals, the right amount of worthiness. This image can inspire awe, but it can also create distance. It can make the Divine feel like a monarch beyond the clouds rather than the Life breathing in the center of every moment.

New Thought and Metaphysical Christianity invite a different seeing.

They do not ask us to abandon reverence. They ask us to bring reverence closer. They suggest that God is not merely a distant Being to be approached, but the very Presence in which we live, move, breathe, perceive, and awaken.

This is where the sacred phrase “I AM” becomes more than language. It becomes a doorway.

When Jesus speaks the words “I AM,” he is not only making a statement about himself as a separate figure in history. He is revealing the nature of spiritual identity itself. He is modeling Truth. He is showing humanity what it looks like when consciousness no longer identifies with fear, limitation, separation, or time.

The “I AM” is the living center. It is the Divine Nature recognized in the present moment.

God is closer than the breath

Traditional religion often places God far above us, making the sacred feel distant. Metaphysical Christianity and New Thought change this by focusing on an intimate, immediate presence. God is not a separate power outside of us, just as light is not outside the lamp, and the ocean is not apart from the wave. God is closer than our breath.

This shifts how we pray. Instead of begging a faraway deity to intervene, prayer becomes about aligning our consciousness with what is already true. It is about listening, remembering, and letting our deeper Self shine through. While human pain is real, an unwavering Reality always sits beneath it. By entering the present moment, we embrace the sacred declaration of "I AM"—connecting to our divine Source right here and now.

Jesus reveals the living “I AM”

In the Gospel of John, Jesus uses powerful “I AM” statements with striking force, declaring, “I am the bread of life,” “I am the light of the world,” and “Before Abraham was, I am.” Read only on the surface, these sayings can sound like exclusive claims about a single person. However, through the lens of Metaphysical Christianity, they become luminous revelations of Christ Consciousness—the awakened awareness of our complete oneness with God. Jesus embodied this truth so fully that his life became a mirror, showing us what divine identity looks like when lived without fear or fragmentation.

When Jesus says “I AM,” he speaks from an eternal center rather than an anxious, human personality. This distinction matters because it contrasts two different ways of understanding who we are:

  • The Ego Says: I am my past, my story, and what happened to me. I am my body, my successes, my failures, and what others think of me. I am always running out of time.

  • The Christ Within Says: I am rooted in God and not separate from Love. I am the expression of Divine Life, present right now, and completely whole in essence.

Jesus models the difference between an identity shaped by outer circumstances and an identity revealed by Spirit. He does not point humanity toward a sacred distance. Instead, his teaching that “the kingdom of God is within you” is a direct map inward. Our Divine Nature is not waiting for us at the end of time; it is already shining at the heart of this very moment, simply asking to be recognized.

The present moment is the gate of the I AM

The present moment is the gate of the “I AM.” While time is useful for practical life, the human ego often uses it to hide the sacred. The ego divides life into three places: a past filled with wounds and regrets, a future filled with anxiety and fantasy, and a thin present moment that it barely notices. By keeping our attention locked in what happened or what might happen, the ego avoids the radiance of what is, making us wander through mental rooms that do not exist.

The past contains memories, and the future holds possibilities, but only this moment is actually alive. Being present does not make us passive or cause us to ignore our daily responsibilities. Instead, it makes us clearer, allowing us to respond from our true center rather than react from fear.

In New Thought teaching, consciousness is creative. When our focus is scattered across yesterday and tomorrow, our power feels divided. When we return to the living “I AM,” our creative energy gathers itself. This is the heart of awakening to Divine Presence. It is not an escape from human life, but the realization that Divine Life is already present within us—right where the breath rises, right where the heart aches, and right where the mind grows quiet enough to listen. The present moment is not empty; it is filled with God.

“I AM” is the Divine Nature speaking through us

The phrase “I AM” is sacred because it exists before any description. Before we say “I am tired,” “I am afraid,” or “I am successful,” there is simply the pure fact of being. This pure being is not our ego or personality. It is the luminous ground of our awareness—the Divine Nature expressing itself as your individual life.

New Thought does not claim that your small, personal self is God. Instead, the deeper teaching is that your true Self is of God, in God, and never apart from God. Think of a wave: it cannot claim to be the whole ocean, yet it is never made of anything other than ocean water. In the same way, the "I AM" is a remembrance of your spiritual origin before the mind adds labels.

To speak “I AM” consciously is to stand at the gateway of creation, and what you say next matters deeply:

  • “I am weak” or “I am alone” contracts the heart and creates fear.

  • “I am guided” or “I am one with Divine Love” opens the heart and builds peace.

This is not magical thinking; it is spiritual responsibility. Your thoughts and words create your inner climate, which influences your choices and actions. Jesus modeled a consciousness so united with God that his words carried true life. In Metaphysical Christianity, he is the Way-Shower. He shows us exactly how to live from the eternal “I AM” rather than the frightened human belief of "I am not."

A simple practice for centering in your I AM-ness

Spiritual truth becomes real only when practiced. This simple three-minute exercise helps you step out of the time trap and return to your center when you feel scattered or anxious.

How to Practice

  • Sit and Arrive: Find a quiet place and sit comfortably. Take a slow breath in, let it out gently, and feel your body being held by the chair. You do not have to create the Divine Presence; you only have to stop running from it.

  • Notice the Time Trap: Watch your mind without judgment. Notice if your thoughts are stuck in past memories or future anxieties. Do not fight them. Simply tell yourself: “The past and future are just thoughts appearing now. I return to the Life that is here.”

  • Breathe the Words “I AM”: As you inhale, silently think “I.” As you exhale, silently think “AM.” Do not add any other words. Rest in pure existence. If thoughts pop up, let them drift away like clouds. After a minute, focus on your heart and add a life-affirming phrase like, “I AM one with God,” or “I AM held in Divine Presence.”

  • Carry it into One Action: Before opening your eyes, choose one simple task to do next—like washing a cup, walking, or listening. The practice is complete when the “I AM” enters your daily human life.

From Separation to Unity

The ultimate spiritual shift is moving from separation to union. A distant God makes us feel spiritually empty and keeps us searching for a future arrival. The “I AM” interrupts this search with holy immediacy. It reminds us that the Divine is not postponed, and the Kingdom is here right now.

Unity with God does not erase who you are. A flute does not lose its shape just because breath flows through it to create music. Instead, you become less driven by fear and less controlled by your past wounds. You stop waiting to become worthy of God, and you finally discover the quiet radiance that has been shining inside you all along.

The holy now is already open

The “I AM” presence is not a distant destination. It is the sacred depth of your very next breath.

This eternal presence is the precise center that Jesus spoke from, the space where Christ Consciousness awakens, and the exact threshold where the illusion of separation dissolves. It cannot be held hostage by your past, nor is it waiting for you in some far-off future. It is the infinite Divine reality touching your human awareness from within, right here, right now.

The path to returning home is beautifully simple:

  • Return your attention to the space you occupy.

  • Breathe out the heavy illusions of time.

  • Remember your true spiritual origin.

  • Speak and act from this unshakeable center.

When you allow the words “I AM” to transform from a casual phrase into a holy homecoming, you stop looking for a faraway God and begin living from the Divine within.

Step into the Presence: Share Your Journey
